Why Is My Clothes Dryer Not Drying?

The clothes dryer is supposed to do one thing — dry clothing. When this appliance fails to do that it should be repaired immediately, otherwise you will be hanging your clothes from a laundry line. If your dryer is taking too long to dry your clothes, or not at all, utilize these tips for a solution.

  • dryer-vent-cleaningDo not load the dryer with too many articles of clothing. Too much clothing in a dryer can inhibit all of it from becoming fully dry. On the other hand, only drying an article or two of clothing can also take longer to dry because of the lack of tumbling. If you’re looking to just dry one shirt, throw in an extra dry towel or two.
  • Certain washer settings will leave your clothes more wet than other settings would. A washer that isn’t set for a high speed spin cycle will not drain your clothing of a majority of its water. If this is the case, either increase the speed of the spin cycle on the washer or increase the length of the drying cycle on the dryer.
  • Clean out the lint filter and the area that is housing it. The filter should be wiped down after each cycle and the holding area should be vacuumed out at least once per month.
  • Clean out the hoses of any sedentary lint that may be causing blockages. Replace any hoses that are too long as well because too much slack can cause kinks, which lead to more blockages.
  • Make sure that all of the vents in the dryer, and the one that leads outside, are cleared of any residual lint. Too much of it can restrict airflow, while also increasing the chances of a fire starting since lint is highly combustible.

When your clothes dryer doesn’t do its job, use these tips to help get it working again. As a part of yearly maintenance your dryer should have its vents and hoses professionally cleaned. To learn more, or to schedule a dryer vent cleaning with EnviroGreen Boston, give us a call at (844) 775-7700.
