While having your air ducts regularly cleaned by a professional is essential, it’s also recommended that you do some maintenance in between visits. Doing so will help you get the most out of your HVAC systems year round. Here are three tips for maintaining your air duct system:
1. Clean and/or replace filters. Do this approximately once a month (or as needed). It’s important to take care of this in order to maintain good airflow. Otherwise, dust could build up and impact the efficiency of your system.
2. Wipe down internal components. The coils, blower motor, and other internal components need to be cleaned as well. The coil in particular tends to accumulate debris, causing your system to work harder than it has to. This not only reduces efficiency, but also increases the risk for a malfunction.
3. Take a peek inside. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it’s important to keep an eye out for the following:
- Mold growth
- Excessive dust and debris
Look inside your air ducts occasionally for signs of the above. If you do notice mold, vermin, dust and/or debris, it’s time to call a professional.
