Every home comes with its own set of problems, some not being as obvious as others. However, these threats can cause serious damage to your home if they’re left unchecked. Here are three possible threats you might not have thought to check on.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
In many different household products, there are toxic chemicals labeled as VOCs. Breathing these chemicals can lower the air quality within your home and cause chronic lung problems. Common products that contain VOCs are certain types of paint, aerosol sprays, household cleaners, etc. Always try to purchase natural substitutes or try and make your own.
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
The reason carbon monoxide is so scary is because it’s invisible and odorless. Having a home that produces CO can make you extremely sick, and possibly kill you if there’s enough of it in the air. To avoid being at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, make sure all of your gas appliances and heating systems are properly installed and serviced. Every room in the house should also have a CO detector plugged into the wall.
Did you know there are roughly 14,000 house fires caused by improper dryer ventilation each year, according to the National Fire Protection Agency? With each load of laundry that is dried, lint will begin to build up in the lint filter, trap, and exhaust system. To prevent a house fire, clean the lint filter after each load, clean the lint trap once per month, and have your exhaust system cleaned at least once per year.
